Designed in 2015 specifically to meet World Sailing's Mixed Youth Multihull criteria, the Nacra 15 is a genuinely fast boat, with speeds up to 20 knots and beyond in its semi-foiling configuration. It's raced mixed-gender by design, and it's the boat that carries multihull sailing into the Youth Olympic Games, which makes it one of the more visible entry points into catamaran racing for younger sailors.
History
Morrelli & Melvin and Nacra Sailing designed the Nacra 15 in 2015. In early 2015 World Sailing announced it was looking for a new youth multihull. After trials, it confirmed the Nacra 15 as the new Youth World Championships class, and it was also adopted as a class for the Youth Olympic Games.
How it's built
- Beam 2.35 m
- Mainsail 13.6 sq m, jib 3.3 sq m and spinnaker 16.5 sq m
- Three configurations, called Club, World Sailing and FCS, which differ in their daggerboards and rudder winglets
- A targeted combined crew weight of about 110 to 130 kg
Class and racing
The Nacra 15 is not an Olympic class. The Olympic catamaran is the Nacra 17. The 15 is the multihull at the Youth World Championships and the Youth Olympic Games.
