Sail Commons

Privacy

Last updated September 2026.

Short version: this site doesn't ask for anything from you, doesn't track you across other sites, and doesn't sell anything about you to anyone. Here's the longer, honest version.

What this site collects

Sail Commons is hosted on Cloudflare Pages, which logs basic technical information as part of ordinary web hosting, things like your IP address, browser type, and which pages you requested. That's Cloudflare's infrastructure doing what web hosting does. This site uses Cloudflare Web Analytics to count visits (page views, referrers, countries and page load times, with no cookies and no profiles of individual visitors), doesn't set tracking cookies, and doesn't share anything with an advertising network.

There's no sign-up, no account, and no comment system on this site today. If that changes, this page will say so first.

Search Console

I use Google Search Console to see how this site shows up in Google search, such as which searches bring people here and which pages appear. It reports on search results, not on what you do on the site, and it doesn't place anything in your browser.

Newsletter signup

The newsletter form at /newsletter/ is the one place this site collects anything, and it is the exception to any line on this page that says the site collects nothing. If you use it, I store your email address, which site you signed up on, the time, the wording of the consent you saw, your country, your IP address and your browser type. That record lives in a database at Cloudflare. I keep it because Canada's anti-spam law (CASL) means I have to be able to show that you asked to hear from me. To check that you're a person, the form uses Cloudflare Turnstile, which runs a short check in your browser. I use your address only to send this site's newsletter, and I don't sell it or share it. After you sign up I send one email asking you to confirm; nothing else is sent until you do. Newsletters are sent by Christopher Ross, thisismyurl.com, 210 Gilmore Road, Fort Erie, Ontario L2A 2M3, Canada, through Google Workspace (Gmail), and every email has an unsubscribe link that takes effect immediately. Every message will have an unsubscribe link, and you can ask me at hello@sailcommons.com to delete your address and the record at any time.

If you email hello@sailcommons.com

Your message goes to Christopher Ross directly. It's read by a person, used to respond to you, and not shared, sold, or added to a mailing list without you asking to be on one.

About the young sailors this site is written for

Sail Commons is written for young people learning to sail, among others, but the site itself doesn't knowingly collect personal information from anyone, adult or minor. There's nothing to sign up for and nothing to submit. If a future feature changes that, for example if the planned "commons board" for crew and mentor matching launches, this policy will be updated first, and any feature involving minors will be built with that in mind from the start, not bolted on after.

Sponsored content

Some editions carry a card labelled "Sponsored." Today, every one of those promotes a business I own, so there's no third party involved and nothing to disclose about data sharing with one. There's no visitor data to hand over regardless: Sail Commons runs no tracking pixels or ad-tech scripts, sponsored or not.

Links to other sites

This site links out to news sources, sponsors, and resources it doesn't control. Once you click through, that site's own privacy practices apply, not this one.

Changes to this policy

If this changes, it'll change on this page, with the date at the top updated. If you have a question this page doesn't answer, write to hello@sailcommons.com.

When you tap a phone number or email link on this site, the site keeps a count of it: which kind of link (phone or email) and which page, added to a daily total. It stores no cookie, no IP address, no device details and no time of day, so a count can't be tied back to you.
