Sixteen skippers just left France with no electronic navigation
The Golden Globe Race started today from Les Sables-d'Olonne: a solo, non-stop trip around the world using a sextant, a nautical almanac, and paper charts, the same tools sailors used in 1968. Each boat carries a sealed emergency GPS and satellite phone, but breaking that seal means retiring from the race.
Clarification (2026-10-17): the race rules say a skipper who breaks the seal is deemed to have retired and moves to the Chichester Class, not simply out of the event with no further class.
This is the extreme version of the argument this whole site is built on. Sixteen people just set off to cross three oceans on the fundamentals alone, with the fallback locked in a box they hope never to open.
